Washington has to replace Laremy Tunsil

A torn triceps removes one of the league’s better pass protectors. Daniels’ history behind replacement tackles does not point to one predictable adjustment.

Laremy Tunsil tore his left triceps during Saturday’s practice. Surgery is expected, and the injury could cost him most or all of the season.

Tunsil allowed the sixth-lowest pressure rate among qualifying left tackles last season, according to Next Gen Stats. His average time to pressure allowed was 3.22 seconds, fifth-longest at the position.

In Jayden Daniels’ four full rookie-season games with a starting tackle unavailable, Washington dropped back on 59.7% of its called passes and runs. That was almost identical to 59.9% in Daniels’ other full games. His scramble rate was slightly lower, not higher: 11.2% compared with 12.6%.

There was no consistent result. Daniels struggled against Pittsburgh, then accounted for four touchdowns against Tennessee and ran for 127 yards against Atlanta. Those games do not point to an automatic fantasy downgrade or more rushing.

LSU used five offensive-line combinations during Daniels’ first six games in 2022. His production climbed over the next three games after Will Campbell returned. The line was settling, but so were Daniels and the offense. It is useful history, not a clean cause-and-effect comparison.

Washington lost a key part of its offense. What matters next is the replacement plan: whether Brandon Coleman moves back to left tackle, who takes his place inside and how the protection changes around them.
